Is This Normal?

I think that Indie may have a case of reflux. I know all babies spit up, but Indie spits up a lot, as this picture shows (It was also all over the floor too, and it came out forcefully). She has spit up like this more than once.

Reasons why I think she has Reflux:
Gags a lot
Coughs
Spits up a lot
Whimpers when she spits up (not always)
Fusses while nursing (not every feeding though)

Reasons why I am not sure:
She still sleeps well (though her sleep is sometimes interrupted by crying which is then followed by spit up)
She does not cry that much, just fusses a little which is usually cure-able
She is gaining weight

Things I have tried to help with the spitting up (Reflux):
Feed her less more frequently
Feed her more less frequently
Burp her every few minutes during feedings
Keep her upright for thirty minutes after each feeding
Eliminated dairy for a week
Colic Calm Gripe Water (helped for sure)

So now I am at a loss. I know there are medications for reflux, but I have read that they are over-prescribed. I feel like since she is not crying uncontrollably I would rather not put her on medication, but I do not like to see her in pain when she does cry. She has a doctors appointment in a week and maybe the doctor will have some insight. Any suggestions or advice from all you Moms out there before then would be very much appreciated.

velzy was the same way- everything you describe. i was sure she had reflux but the dr wouldn't do anything about it, said it would pass, and it did. but it still sucked. i totally remember crying one day when she had just finished eating and then threw it all up with a loud nasty gag-cough. it was so sad/frustrating.
i think i just made sure to burp her often when she was eating, didn't eat too spicy, and she slept on her stomach. i know, big no-no? i don't know. it totally helped her sleep more and keep food down when she was sleeping. if you are not into that, you should prop one side of her crib up a little more than the other (roll a towel and put it under her mattress) and keep her head on the higher side, gravity will help keep things down a little and keep the juices from gurgling up.
good luck! long comment, but i remember all this was so annoying, so i hope it helps and i will let you know anything else i remember.

It sounds to me like Indie probably does have reflux, but maybe not "reflux disease" (GER vs GERD). The main reason to put babies on medicine is if their reflux is interfering with weight gain. But most of the time parents come in wanting medicine because it becomes a laundry issue, and it gets annoying, and because the medications are relatively safe most doctors hand them out like candy. So you're right--they are over-prescribed, but it rarely causes problems. The medicines actually may or may not help with the spittyness, but they will likely help if it is the reflex that is making her fussy (they decrease the acid in her stomach, so it doesn't hurt when she refluxes). Hopefully this all makes sense--email me if you have any questions.

Rome did that a lot and still does sometimes if I let him eat too long. It was a surprise at first and very forceful. Like a straight line of milk coming from nose and mouth. Scary. Then, he would be hungry an hour later because he just threw up his entire meal. I figured out that he doesn't like when I have milk or yogurt. I can eat ice cream and cheese and he is fine. He spits up when he is on his tummy too, so I can't do tummy time after he eats. He also cries whenever he spits up. He is getting better I think. I still go through multiple pajamas somedays. (him and me) Good luck finding out what is causing it. If she is still gaining weight then she should be okay.

Oh my goodness! That is a lot of spit up! Unfortuneately I am not much help. Neither of my kids spit up much. Good luck finding something that will help her.

After being on medication for a week River was a totally different baby. Although Indie doesn't sound like she is too fussy. River screamed with every feeding.

Hey Meg, I know that 2 of Rachels kids actually had the reflux thing. You could ask her what she does? I do love your face in the second photo though.

Olivia is sooo fussy...but doesn't have reflux, or maybe she does. Who knows? I don't like medication either, but after reading your friends comments, we probably should have tried if it would have helped to make her happier. Poor Indie...and you
